Canada's government has unveiled the details of a national plan that will set a minimum price on carbon emissions next year at C$10 per ton (US$7.63/ton), then increase the tax by that amount each year until 2022, when the minimum price on carbon will peak at C$50/ton. Speaking in Parliament, Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said "provinces and territories will have a choice in how they implement this pricing. They can put a direct price on carbon pollution, or they can adopt a cap-and-trade system, with the expectation that it be stringent enough to meet or exceed the federal benchmark." He added that provinces and territories will decide how taxes from carbon will be spent.
