“Electrify everything” has become a familiar call-to-arms for the energy transition, but electrification simply isn’t practical for decarbonizing industrial processes that require steam or high-temperature heat. Converting electricity to heat is expensive and challenging because it creates efficiency losses, says Christie Obiaya, CEO of solar thermal company Heliogen. To get around this, the US-based firm has demonstrated a system combining artificial intelligence and concentrated solar power to produce steam or ultra-high temperature heat directly.
