The oils and fats known as hydrotreated esters and fatty acids (Hefa) are in short supply as more capacity to produce SAF comes on line. Exotic “e-fuels” technology that combines waste CO2 and clean hydrogen to produce SAF is still in the development stage and entails high costs. But some SAF developers are turning to more mundane feedstocks like woody biomass and agricultural and municipal waste to produce lower-carbon jet fuel.
