Just as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, the Biden Administration issued a report that tracks the progress of its SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) Grand Challenge launched in September 2021 to spawn a homegrown industry for sustainable aviation fuels. At first glance, the massive increase in US SAF supplies over the last four years looks impressive. Annual domestic SAF supplies plus imports climbed from 5 million gallons in 2021 to 26 million gallons in 2023, with provisional figures showing another doubling to 52 million gallons in first-half 2024.
