Back in 2011, a little-known company named Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) was spun off from its parent firm in China’s southeastern Fujian province. Thirteen years later, CATL commands 37% of the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market— over twice that of its closest rival, BYD, according to battery information provider SNE Research. Supplying global automakers such as Tesla, BMW and Ford alongside domestic EV upstarts like Nio and Li Auto, the company raked in more than 400 billion yuan ($55.6 billion) in revenue in 2023, according to its annual report.
