Europe’s largest economy and top natural gas consumer, Germany, is undergoing a political sea change as it confronts the challenge of boosting economic growth by addressing high energy prices while ramping up defense spending. But even as its politicians harden their stand against Moscow, a potential rise in piped Russian gas flows to Europe if a truce between Russia and Ukraine materializes this year could challenge Berlin’s plans to diversify its supplies and advance its energy transition.
