China is a leader in green hydrogen development, both in terms of cost and scale, driven by its rapid expansion of renewable energy. Last year, the country accounted for more than half of the global renewable hydrogen production capacity that exceeded 250,000 tons per year, according to an official from the National Energy Administration at a recent conference in Beijing. On the flipside, hydrogen demand in China is still predominantly gray, and the cost gap between green and gray is stymying the economics. Also, China's green hydrogen policy is considered unsophisticated and isn't lending much momentum to either the cost curve or project development.
